Discover how IFS and EMDR therapy work together to heal trauma, anxiety, and relationship pain at Heartland Christian Counseling in West Des Moines, Iowa.

You've tried traditional therapy. You've talked about your problems. You understand why you're struggling. But something still doesn't feel healed.

That's because real change frequently requires more than insight—it requires healing at a deeper level, where your protective patterns live and where traumatic memories are stored.

At Heartland Christian Counseling, we use two powerful, evidence-based approaches: IFS (Internal Family Systems) and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing), which work together to create healing that actually lasts. (Buys, 2025, pp. 241-260) Our therapists are fully licensed professionals with some having trained in IFS and EMDR.

Understanding Your Internal System: IFS

Imagine your brain like a family with different members, each with their own job:

·     The Worrier constantly scans for danger.

·     The Protector keeps people at a distance so you won't be hurt.

·     The Perfectionist demands flawless performance.

·     The People-Pleaser sacrifices your needs to keep others happy.

·     The Critic harshly judges everything you do

These aren't signs of mental illness. They're protective parts of you that developed to help you survive difficult situations—past wounds, family patterns, trauma.

The problem: In your present life, these parts often work against each other, creating:

·     Anxiety that hijacks your peace

·     Relationship conflict and distance

·     Self-sabotage and low self-worth

·     Exhaustion from constant internal struggle

·     Disconnection from your core self

What is IFS Therapy?

Internal Family Systems (IFS) helps you understand these protective parts with compassion and access your Self, your deepest, wisest, most whole center.

In a typical IFS session at Heartland, you can expect an encouraging environment where your therapist will guide you to notice different parts of yourself and examine how they show up in your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Together, you and your therapist will gently identify which parts may be carrying pain or trying to protect you, and invite open conversation with them. At your own pace, you will learn to listen to these parts without judging, building trust between them and your core Self. Sessions often include guided visualization, compassionate dialogue, and practical tools to help you feel more curious, calm, and connected inside. You remain in control of the process, and your therapist is there to aid you every step of the way.

Your Self is:

·     Inherently capable and resourceful

·     Compassionate (toward yourself and others)

·     Creative and connected to your values

·     Able to lead your life with focus and intent

·     Connected to your faith and spiritual foundation

When your Self is in charge, your protective parts can relax. They don't have to work so hard anymore.

How IFS Creates Change

With IFS therapy at Heartland, you'll:

1.     Identify protective parts (the ones running the show)

2.     Understand their protective role (why they developed, what they're protecting you from)

3.     Release judgment (these parts are trying to help, even if they're not working)

4.     Access Self-leadership (your compassion, wisdom, and inner strength)

5.     Transform your life (from reactive protection to genuine connection and peace)

IFS is especially effective for:

·     Anxiety and worry patterns

·     Relationship conflict and codependency

·     Perfectionism and harsh self-criticism

·     Attachment wounds and fear of abandonment

·     Marriage counseling (helping couples understand each other's protective patterns)

·     Self-sabotage and limiting beliefs (Okafor, 2026)

Clients report:

·     Anxiety that no longer controls them

·     Relationships that feel safer and more authentic

·     Freedom from perfectionism

·     Better emotional regulation

·     Deeper spiritual connection (Hodgdon et al., 2021, pp. 22-43)

Processing Trauma at the Source: EMDR

Here's something important: If you experienced trauma, your brain might be storing it differently than other memories.

When we experience overwhelming events—abuse, loss, accidents, assault, grief—our brain sometimes doesn't process them normally. Instead of filing the memory away as "something that happened," your brain keeps treating it as a present threat. (Memory Processing and Trauma Imprints, 2025)

That's why:

·     A sound triggers panic.

·     A smell brings back overwhelming emotion.

·     You feel unsafe even when you're objectively safe

·     Anxiety seems to come "out of nowhere."

Traditional talk therapy helps you understand your trauma, but it doesn't always help your brain process it. (Beyond Talk Therapy: Effective Trauma Treatment Alternatives, 2024)

What is EMDR?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing) is a specialized therapy that helps your brain complete what was interrupted during trauma. (Harper et al., 2009, pp. 81-90) EMDR sessions at Heartland typically last about 50 minutes. During a session, you can expect your therapist to provide clear guidance at every step, so you always know what is happening. Most clients notice a sense of increased calm or a shift in perspective as the process unfolds, and sessions are paced according to your comfort to ensure you feel safe and supported throughout. (Marks, 2023)

Here's how it works:

1.     You briefly focus on the traumatic memory (not reliving it—just noticing it's there)

2.     Your therapist provides bilateral stimulation (guided eye movements, alternating taps, or sounds that engage both brain hemispheres)

3.     Your brain naturally processes and integrates the memory through this specialized protocol

4.     The emotional charge decreases and the memory becomes just a memory—not a present threat (Amano & Toichi, 2016)

It sounds simple, but the neuroscience is profound. EMDR helps your brain do what it was designed to do—integrate and move forward. (Efficacy of Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing for Patients with Posttraumatic-Stress Disorder: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials, 2013)

How EMDR Creates Change

EMDR is highly effective for:

·     Trauma and PTSD (single incidents or complex trauma)

·     Childhood wounds and abuse

·     Grief that feels "stuck."

·     Anxiety rooted in specific traumatic events.

·     First responder or combat trauma

·     Loss and abandonment wounds

·     Panic attacks triggered by trauma. (The Use of Eye-Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy in Treating Post-traumatic Stress Disorder—A Systematic Narrative Review, 2018)

What's remarkable: Many clients see significant change in fewer sessions than traditional therapy because EMDR works at a neurological level. (Maxfield, 2019, pp. 239-246)

Clients report:

·     Traumatic memories losing their emotional intensity.

·     Reduced hypervigilance and anxiety

·     Ability to feel safe again

·     Freedom from trauma-triggered panic

·     Better sleep and nervous system regulation (Yunitri et al., 2020, pp. 102-113)

The Power of IFS + EMDR Together

Here's where the real healing happens:

IFS helps you understand and heal the parts of you that were broken apart or created by trauma.

EMDR helps your brain process and integrate traumatic memories.

Together, they address trauma at multiple levels:

·     Emotional: Understanding protective parts with compassion

·     Neurological: Processing stuck traumatic memories

·     Relational: Healing attachment wounds and relationship patterns

·     Spiritual: Reconnecting to your faith, wholeness, and God's healing

Why Faith + Clinical Expertise Matters

At Heartland Christian Counseling, IFS and EMDR aren't separate from your faith—they're integrated with it. If you desire, your sessions can include prayer, reflection on Scripture, or open spiritual conversation alongside therapeutic work. For example, a therapist might begin with a prayer for guidance and comfort, invite you to bring meaningful Bible verses into the session, or help you explore what spiritual truths feel relevant as you process your experiences. This approach allows faith to be an active part of your healing journey, designed for your comfort and preferences.

Many clients find that:

·     Accessing your Self connects you to God's unconditional love and compassion.

·     Healing protective parts is consistent with biblical forgiveness and grace.

·     Understanding your "internal family" improves your ability to love others as Jesus taught.

·     Spiritual practices (prayer, Scripture, meditation) are tools for Self-leadership and healing.

·     Your faith is a pillar for sustainable wholeness.
