Owner & Therapist at Heartland Christian Counseling

When considering therapy for trauma or deep emotional pain, one of the most common questions Christian clients ask is simple yet profound: "How does this fit into my faith?"

At Heartland Christian Counseling, everything we do is rooted in Scripture first. If a therapeutic method conflicts with God’s Word, we throw it out. With many modalities, therapists might find useful pieces that align with biblical principles while discarding the rest.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is entirely different. It does not replace our trust in God; rather, it honors the incredible, restorative design He built into our very physiology.

What Is EMDR and How Does It Work?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. In simple terms, it is a therapy that uses bilateral stimulation—stimulating the left and right sides of the brain alternately—to help your mind naturally process and resolve stuck trauma.

When an overwhelming or traumatic event occurs, the memory often becomes trapped in our emotional, feeling brain. Even when we logically understand that the danger has passed, our nervous system remains on alert, causing us to feel stuck. Bilateral stimulation crosses the brain’s midline, moving those painful experiences from the reactive emotional centers up into our thinking brain so they can be digested, understood, and healed.

God’s Natural Healing Blueprint: The REM Sleep Connection

If bilateral stimulation sounds novel or clinical, consider something God already gave each of us: REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep.

Whenever you enter REM sleep and begin to dream, your eyes naturally move back and forth at rapid speed. God specifically designed our bodies and brains to use this exact mechanism every night to process the events, emotions, and thoughts of our daily lives. EMDR simply harnesses that God-given restorative rhythm while you are awake, helping your brain do what God engineered it to do from the very beginning.

What Does an EMDR Session Actually Look Like?

When EMDR was first developed, practitioners primarily guided clients to follow a moving finger or light bar back and forth with their eyes. While eye movements are still an effective option, many clients prefer tactile stimulation.

In our practice, we frequently use gentle handheld buzzers. Clients simply hold a small device in each hand, and the devices provide a light, alternating vibration—much like the soft vibration of a phone—back and forth between the left and right hands.

This approach is adaptable for all ages, including children. For younger clients, the buzzers can be tucked into pockets or placed in soft sleeves wrapped gently around their arms, keeping the process approachable, non-threatening, and comfortable.

As the buzzers alternate back and forth, you do not have to force anything. You simply give yourself permission to notice whatever rises to the surface. It gently unearths memories or emotional knots stored in the subconscious so they can finally be resolved.

Moving From Talking to True Breakthrough

Many people spend years in talk therapy recounting their painful past or difficult childhood experiences. While talk therapy provides meaningful insights, sometimes talking alone cannot quite push you over the ledge into lasting healing.

If you have felt trapped in past pain and wondered whether EMDR is biblically sound, take comfort knowing that true healing never conflicts with God’s design. EMDR simply cooperates with the remarkable restorative systems our Creator knit into our bodies, unlocking the freedom and peace He desires for your life.
